Preparing for Your First Spray Tan: What to Expect and How to Prep

Thinking about booking your first spray tan? First of all: YES, babe. You’re about to enter your glow era, and trust us—there’s no going back.

At Just Peachy, we’re all about making sure your first spray tan experience is as flawless (and stress-free) as possible. Whether you’re bronzing up for a vacation, a wedding, or just because you feel like looking like that girl, we’ve got you covered.

Here’s exactly what you need to know to prep like a pro and what to expect when you step into the booth.

Why Proper Prep Matters

Your tan’s final look (and longevity!) depends on the condition of your skin before you get sprayed. Smooth, hydrated skin = even application and a longer-lasting glow. Skipping prep? That’s how you end up streaky, patchy, or fading faster than your last situationship.

Preparing for your first spray tan the right way sets you up for bronzed success.

48 Hours Before Your Appointment

Start your prep early, glow queen!

  • Exfoliate your entire body. Focus on dry areas like elbows, knees, ankles, and wrists. A non-oil-based scrub or exfoliating mitt works best.

  • Avoid heavy lotions or oils. These can create a barrier that prevents the tan from absorbing properly.

  • Shave or wax if needed. Do this at least 24–48 hours before your appointment so your pores have time to close and you avoid “spotty” looking legs.

Pro Tip: The smoother the canvas, the smoother the tan.

24 Hours Before Your Appointment

Time for the "almost glow" checklist:

  • Exfoliate one more time if needed. Especially if your skin feels dry.

  • Hydrate your skin lightly with a basic, fragrance-free moisturizer. (Think: lightweight, not greasy.)

  • Skip heavy skincare treatments. No retinol, glycolic acids, or anything that could cause extra sensitivity.

Pro Tip: Hydrated skin holds a tan longer, but don't overdo it right before your spray.

Day of Your Appointment

Okay, it’s go time. Here’s how to show up ready to glow:

  • Shower, but don't apply lotions, oils, deodorant, or makeup. Your skin should be completely clean and dry.

  • Wear dark, loose-fitting clothing. Think cozy sweatpants, oversized tees, and no tight bras or straps that could rub your fresh tan.

  • Bring or wear flip-flops or slides. Tight sneakers or boots are a no-go right after your appointment.

  • Pull your hair up. We’ll provide hair nets if needed, but a low bun or ponytail helps keep everything clean.

What to Expect During Your Spray Tan

First time jitters? Totally normal. Here's the play-by-play:

  1. Consultation: We’ll chat about your glow goals—how dark you want to go, any special event timing, and your natural skin tone.

  2. Prep Touch-Ups: We’ll apply barrier cream to tricky spots like elbows, knees, palms, and ankles.

  3. Custom Application: Your artist will expertly spray you from head to toe using even, sweeping motions. We’ll guide you on when to turn, pose, and breathe—you’re in good hands.

  4. Drying Time: After spraying, we’ll dust you with Drying Powder so you’re dry to the touch. You’ll chill for a minute or two before getting dressed.

  5. Glow Time: You’re good to go! Your tan will continue developing over the next 1-8 hours (time varies depending on the tan you choose–we'll let ya know beforehand).

Post-Tan Aftercare

First Rinse:

  • Rinse with lukewarm water only—no soaps, scrubs, or shaving during that first rinse.

  • You might see some color washing off—that's normal! It's just the bronzer, not your actual tan.

After That:

  • Avoid sweaty workouts, tight clothes, and swimming for the next 24 hours.

  • Use gentle, hydrating products like our Luxe Lotion and DHA-Infused Body Wash to keep your glow juicy and even.

Long-Term Care:

  • Moisturize daily.

  • Pat dry after showers.

  • Exfoliate lightly around day 5–6 to help your tan fade evenly.

Choosing to spray tan is a glow-up move—but preparing for your first spray tan like a pro? That’s next-level.

We’re here to make your first time a total vibe: stress-free, flawless, and full of hype-girl energy.
